Server Environments

File and Print Server
(may also be used as an installation distribution point) Environment.Member
Server best suited for this function.
- Memory > Processor > Disk >
Network
- Key Concern: Disk I/O or the number of
User's attempting access to the Server is the most critical
concern
- Strategies
- Many connections but are inactive -
adjust auto-disconnect settings in this environment
- Focus on the number of Users accessing
Server concurrently (also how they are accessing the server) and
amount of resources demanded
IIS (File and Print Server)
Environment. Member Server best suited for this function.
- Memory > Processor > Disk >
Network
- Key concern: IIS must fulfill requests from
cache (cache hits) to achieve maximum performance.
- IIS has it's own cache separate from the OS.
Regedit can be used to share cache for all IIS Services installed on the
Server. Caution: if cache size is increased beyond amount available in
physical memory - performance of other processes could decrease. HKEY _

Application Server
Environment. Member Server best suited for this function.
- Processor > Memory > Disk >
Network
- Key concern: Amount of Memory an application
uses.
- Application Server usually has smaller more
frequent requests to it than File and Print Server Environment
Domain Server
Environment
- Memory and Network > Processor >
Disk
- Key concern: Activity generated between
Servers - not so much activity of Users
